Social media nasty
(482) Monday, February 25, 2019

Dear Parents,

Please read link below to be aware of a social media nasty.

Parents are being urged to supervise their children’s online activity due a cyberbullying game called the "Momo challenge".

Gardaí say that the challenge is appearing on social media platforms and targets children and/or vulnerable people.

It is understood that "Momo" makes contact through social media, and allegedly asks the person to perform dangerous tasks, including self-harm.

Please be advised that the image on the report is not pleasant but we need to keep informed

1st class, 2nd and 3rd classes return to classrooms at St. Luke's NS
(470) Thursday, November 29, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians

Yesterday our 1st and 2nd classes were able to return to our classrooms on the 1st and 2nd floors, as the temporary remediation work has been completed there.

Tomorrow, Friday 30th November, we will welcome our 3rd classes back from Le Chéile.

It is wonderful to have the pupils back here again as we really missed them. With the Winter weather coming in, it is better for the pupils to be able to stay here in the mornings and not to have to walk across to Le Chéile.

We hope to have the 4th, 5th and 6th classes back in the building soon before Christmas.

We wish to extend our gratitude once again to Dr. Moran and staff at Le Chéile for offering us shelter in our time of need. They have been so kind to pupils and staff there during our stay.

We would like to state that even though Le Chéile is closed for secondary pupils this Monday it will still be open for St. Luke's pupils as normal.

We thank you for your continued support at this time.

Warm regards

Fingal Road Closure Proposal
(469) Thursday, November 29, 2018
Attn: Ms. Vivienne Bourke, Principal
Dear Ms. Bourke,
I'm not sure if your school is aware that there's a proposal in front of Fingal County Council at the moment to close part of the R121 road from the roundabout at Le Cheile School, Tyrellstown to the Swing Roundabout in Hollystown. This may affect your school as I'm aware that there are children in the area which go to your school.
Fingal County Council are now taking submissions via email ( or their consultation website ( I'd appreciate if you could bring this to the attention of your Parents Council (or any member of staff / parent / any local bus providers which this may affect; please feel free to share) and would consider making a submission as a local school in the area which maybe impacted.
Thanks and Regards,
Stephen McBrien

Update School Building and An Taoiseach's Visit
(466) Thursday, November 22, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians

Yesterday, 21st November, An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar TD, the Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh TD, and Fine Gael Dáil candidate Emer Currie, made a low-key visit to St Luke's National School. They met with the Board of Management and some of the pupils and staff of St. Luke's NS.

They walked around the building, visiting the classrooms, and they saw the yard with the scaffolding and temporary exclusion zone. They also visited all of the 1st class children in the school hall. They spoke to the children, the staff and the Board of Management. They have assured us that they are working as hard as they can to resolve the building issues.

The builders will work 12 hour shifts, each weekday 3pm-3am, and at the weekends, on the remedial work on the remaining classrooms. They hope that they will be completed in the coming weeks. A full structural assessment of the St. Luke's building structures will be carried out as part of the remediation works. They will not work onsite whilst the children are present.

A transition process will then take place, in bringing children, who are currently off-site at neighbouring schools, back to the Tyrrelstown schools, as well as getting the classrooms ready for children.

Due to the fact, that we have had to cancel the Christmas concerts this year, the Department of Education have kindly given some money towards taking all of the children to a pantomime or Christmas movie in the coming weeks.

On November 29th the army brass band will put on a concert for all of the children in the school hall. Santa will still visit the children too on December 20th and he is really looking forward to meeting all of the children!

We wish to thank our Patron, our Board of Management, our staff, Le Cheile secondary school and most importantly - you the parents and our wonderful pupils for sticking with us through this difficult time. As I have said before, Tyrrelstown is a wonderful community and you have once again proven that by your support and strength in these challenging times.

We will keep you up to date on the noticeboard in the coming weeks.

Many thanks

Vivienne Bourke

Update 8th November 2018
(464) Thursday, November 8, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians

The Patron and Board of Management of St. Luke's NS have been furnished with 3 reports today. The first report is from Tim Murnan, Director of Punch Engineering. The second report is from Afec Fire Safety. The third report is from Paddy MacNeill of Scott MacNeill Health and Safety Consultants.

The Patron and Board of Management are satisfied that these three reports indicate that the school is structurally safe and fire safe on the ground floor for all of the pupils who will return to school tomorrow, November 9th.

Copies of all three of these reports are available for parents, who would like to see them, from the Department of Education Building Section in Tullamore. Due to GDPR the school body are not in a position to publish these reports but parents may request them from the Department of Education if desired.

We would like to state that all official comments made by the Patron and Board of Management of St. Luke's National School are published on our website noticeboard at .

Update 8th November
(463) Thursday, November 8, 2018

School Re-opens for all pupils tomorrow November 9th

Dear Parents/Guardians

Today, 8th November, the Patron and Board of Management of St. Luke's NS received updated certification from Punch Engineering, Afec Fire Engineering Consultants and MacNeill Health and Safety Consultants.

The Patron and Board of Management have made the informed decision that the ground floor of St. Luke’s NS will be safe for pupils to return to school tomorrow.

We look forward to welcoming all of the pupils back to school tomorrow 9th November.

As outlined in our previous update, Junior infants, Senior infants and 2nd class will come straight into their classrooms on the ground floor. 1st class will go to their new classroom in the hall.

Please ensure that your child has a coat and warm clothing for tomorrow, and a change of clothes/socks for wet days, especially the older children, who must walk to and from Le Chéile every day. Please ensure that the children bring adequate food and drink so that there is as little disruption to the school day as possible.

We would ask that if your child is sick, or has an appointment, that you keep them at home.

Many thanks once again to all of you for your support. A special thank you to the local Gardaí, who are on duty every day to keep our children safe, and Le Chéile Secondary  School for accommodating the older pupils.

We are really looking forward to seeing all of the children tomorrow.

Many thanks

Vivienne Bourke

Principal St. Luke’s NS

Update 7th November 2018
(462) Wednesday, November 7, 2018

Update 7th November 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians

I would like to thank everyone who attended the walk around in our building this morning and the subsequent meeting in the hall. The parents had a chance to meet with representatives from the DES, Punch Engineering, An Garda Síochána and an independent Health and Safety Consultant from Scott and Mac Neill – Paddy MacNeill. The parents raised a number of concerns and asked many questions about the safety of the school building from perspectives such as: structural safety, fire safety and the additional needs of children with special educational needs etc.

After the meeting in the hall, the Patron and the Board of Management met privately with Punch Engineering’s Director Tim Murnane and Technical Director David Clarke, along with Independent Consultant of Health and Safety Paddy Mac Neill.

After discussions with these technical representatives, the Patron and Board of Management reached an informed decision about the reopening of the school at St. Luke’s NS. The Patron and Board of Management are now satisfied that the ground floor is structurally sound and have been furnished with a report from Punch Engineering which states that the ground floor is structurally sound.

Taking into account the safety concerns raised by the parents of St. Luke’s NS this morning, there is a second safety check being conducted by Independent Consultant of Health and Safety – Paddy Mac Neill, and the Patron and Board of Management will not be in a position to open the school on the ground floor, or the hall until that safety check has been completed, and the works recommended therein have been implemented fully.

Tomorrow 8th November, we invite 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class children, who will be going to Le Cheile for the short term to attend school at 9am. The children will not come into the building, but will line up outside the school bike shed and will be supervised by staff. They will then be walked through the park and into Le Cheile, where classes will resume for them. There will be extra supervision provided by staff to ensure that the children can settle in to their new surroundings.

When the Patron and Board of Management are satisfied that the other safety works directed in the report by Paddy Mac Neill have been completed, we will inform parents of the expected start date for children from Junior infants up to 2nd class.

Once again, we thank you for your support in these difficult times, and we thank the wider community for their co-operation. We extend a special thanks to Le Cheile for accommodating our older pupils and look forward to the pupils return to education.

Kind regards

Vivienne Bourke
