Internet safety issues parental advice
(435) Thursday, August 30, 2018

The internet is becoming a bigger part of our children’s lives; it is important that we get involved with what they are doing online. This means not just talking to our children about what they do online but also listening. It is important that we talk openly and regularly about our concerns and agree boundaries around internet use in our homes. While the internet undoubtedly presents fantastic opportunities for children, it is equally clear that there are valid concerns about children spending too much time online, accessing inappropriate content, and communicating with people with intent to harm or exploit them. As parents anatural desire is to keep the children safe. The best online safety strategy, regardless of age, is to talk with your child and to engage with them about what they are doing and who they are doing it with.

Please see link below to further advice on how to keep our children safe.

Boxing in Saint Luke's NS

Boxing Training

Ms. Brennan’s 5th class started boxing on Monday 30th April for four weeks finishing on Monday 21st May. We learned skills like the jab, hook and more. We also learned how to double skip. Our three coaches were Peter, Raj and Niall. They were well experienced coaches and were really fun. We liked how Peter showed all the brilliant medals, trophies and the belt he had won over the years for boxing. The belt felt quite heavy. We were very grateful to be picked to experience the world of boxing and most of all were really happy to miss English!

Our favourite time was when we did a forward tumble and punched the pads, then ran back to the end of the line. We also played Ship, Sea, Shore and more fun activities.

Peter would do a warm up at the start of every session.  We would start out in a light jog and we would then go into a sprint and many other running games. Peter would also help with our strength.

Niall would help to increase our running speed and also our skipping speed and height.

Raj would help with our punch speed.

Thanks to all our coaches from the children in Ms Brennan’s 5th Class.

By Martin, Ayisha & Isabella

Weaving Well-Being
(417) Thursday, May 24, 2018

Saint Luke's NS has decided to adopt the "Weaving Well-Being" programme from 2nd to 6th classes in the 2018/2019 Academic year to promote Emotional Literacy and resillience in our school.

Saint Luke's NS has decided to adopt the "Weaving Well-Being" programme from 2nd to 6th classes in the 2018/2019 Academic year to promote Emotional Literacy and resillience in our school.

This affordable Positive Education programme consists of 10 lessons for each class level and is grounded in evidence based interventions from the rapidly expanding field of Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology is the science of well-being.

It is underpinned by the concept that a state of well-being is not simply the absence of the negative, but the presence of the positive.

The Weaving Well-Being programme gives children the opportunity to weave positivity into their daily lives through a range of activities in a variety of areas.

These areas include identifying and using their authentic character strengths, boosting positive emotions, developing and nurturing positive relationships and connections, building practical resilience skills (including mindfulness) and developing self-efficacy through empowering beliefs.

The lessons are designed to be implemented within the framework of the SPHE curriculum. Each lesson plan includes the relevant strands and strand units for ease of planning.
